Description
Based on the actual case files of one of the most intriguing unsolved crimes in the nation’s history, "Zodiac" is a thriller from David Fincher, director of "Se7en" and "Panic Room." As a serial killer terrifies the San Francisco Bay Area and taunts police with his ciphers and letters, investigators in four jurisdictions search for the murderer. The case will become an obsession for four men as their lives and careers are built and destroyed by the endless trail of clues.
Closer in spirit to a police procedural than a gory serial-killer flick, David Fincher's Zodiac provides a sleek, armrest-gripping re-invention of the crime film. It surveys the investigation of the Zodiac killings that terrorized the San Francisco Bay area in the late -60-early -70s; Zodiac not only killed people, but cultivated a Jack the Ripper aura by sending icky letters to the newspapers and daring readers to solve coded messages. But the film's focus isn't on the killer. We follow the reporters and detectives whose lives are taken over by the case, notably an addictive crime writer (a sartorially splendid Robert Downey Jr.), an awkward editorial cartoonist (Jake Gyllenhaal), and a hard-working cop (Mark Ruffalo). Fincher and his brilliant cinematographer Harris Savides are deft at capturing the period feel of the city, without laying on the seventies kitsch, and James Vanderbilt's script doles out its big moments to major and minor characters alike. Fincher's confidence is infectious; the movie glides through its myriad details with such dexterity that even the blind alleys and red herrings seem essential. The well-chosen cast includes unexpected people popping up all over: Anthony Edwards as a lunch-bucket homicide cop; Charles Fleischer as a mysterious suspect; Elias Koteas and Donal Logue as small-town policemen whose districts are hit by Zodiac; Chloe Sevigny as Gyllenhaal's sweet-natured wife; Brian Cox as the media-friendly lawyer Melvin Belli, so famous he once appeared on Star Trek; and the mighty John Carroll Lynch, as a supremely creepy suspect. The film is based on non-fiction books by Robert Graysmith (he's portrayed by Gyllenhaal), although Fincher and co. did extensive research on their own. The result is a propulsive whodunit without (thus far) an ending, but the uncertainty makes the film even more intriguing. --Robert Horton

Summary: "Right product, disappointing service."
I accidentally ordered an HD DVD. I don't have an HD player. That was my own carelessness, and I take the blame. I'm out a few bucks on an unplayable disc.
But when I tired to contact the seller to see if we could work out something mutually satisfactory (say, a trade with me paying the additional postage) I got nothing as a reply. Zip. Guess they gotta unload those dead-format discs to any sucker dumb enough to buy 'em!
I give these guys a bad grade for customer service and a general lack of scruples. Is it really worth burning a potential future customer for such a tiny profit?

Summary: "Disappointing and disquieting police failure"
A real criminal, a real serial killer and his "adventures". What makes this story interesting is the fact that the police never succeeded and never arrested the killer, in spite of the help of the media in San Francisco. It all amounted to circumstantial evidence and no indictment, not to mention conviction, was ever pronounced, hence no suspect declared and arrested. The case can come out today because all those who were suspected to have played a role in this sinister story are dead or out of the way. That will not change anything anyway because the case is now closed since the main yet undeclared suspect is dead. The real question is to know whether the police, the various police departments concerned did their job properly, if the inspectors did theirs and if their hierarchy supported them. It's always difficult to say especially with the role of the Attorney general or public prosecutor in the area. There are so many elements that may stop an investigation in the USA, particularly elections since the main characters in security forces are elected and local officials are the bosses of the Police. A lot can be said and a lot can be done, or undone or just not done. And that seems to be the case here. The film is slightly slow though and the attempt to dramatize it does not succeed entirely.

Summary: "Best David Fincher Movie. Best Special Features too!"
I am an unabashed fan when it comes to anything David Fincher. This man has a demanding eye for detail and has an impressive pedigree. I remember seeing this movie in the theater and walking out bemused of if I liked or disliked what I just watched. I decided to purchase the Blu Ray (because I really just like David Fincher)and watch the movie for a second time. This time around I was on the bandwagon claiming this is David Fincher at his peak. The kicker is, I am not a special features guy, and I watched every bit of special features this had to offer because I was so enthralled with the finished product and the borderline obsessive-compulsive eye for detail this story contained. I highly recommend this blu ray. It is beautiful and the special features truly are special.

Summary: "Great Movie"
This movie is absolutely fascinating. Not only does it follow the case of the Zodiac killer, but it also explores the idea of obsession. One thing to know before viewing, is that while it tries not to, this movie is slightly biased. The movie isn't based off of the actual Zodiac case files, rather it is based off of Robert Graysmith's book. (Some people argue the amount of accuracy). Overall I'd say this is a great movie, and it portrays well what happens when obsession controls your life.
