Description

Las Vegas socialite and otherwordly avenger Joanna Archer gave up everything when she embraced mortality—abandoning her powers and altering her destiny to save a child . . . and a city. Now her former allies are her enemies—and her enemies have nothing to fear.

Yet still she is bound to a prophecy that condemns her to roam a nightmare landscape that ordinary humans cannot see and dare not enter. And a beast is on her trail—an insane killer blinded by bloodlust, who's determined to rip much more from Joanna than merely her now-fragile life. Survival is no longer an option in this dark realm where good and evil have blurred into confusing shades of gray—unless she can gather together an army of onetime foes and destroy everything she once believed in.

Summary: "Middle Book Syndrome"

I really love this series as a whole, and have no regrets about buying this book to add to my collection, as it's a necessary chapter in the continuing story. Pettersson's distinctive style is consistent, we get some important revelations about Zoe the missing mother (which promptly makes me furious at Warren), a scene between Olivia and Jo, and a lot more information about what it's like to be a Shadow agent. The return of Harlen Tripp was beautiful, fun, and overall entertaining.

So why only 3 stars? Largely because this book suffers "middle book" syndrome, where the plot really doesn't seem to go much of anywhere. There's personal growth, but as far as any plot goals -- Bring down the Tulpa, Bring down Warren, save Hunter from himself, understand the rules of Midheaven -- there's no success or even much forward progress. It was ultimately exercise in frustration that left me wanting the next book just so that some goal could be completed.

With a lack of coherent plot, aside from not really going anywhere, the action seems largely random. I get the feeling it's all set up for later books, but an entire book of set up just isn't as fun. Especially when the books devote so much time to a retread of past books.

So, it's a decent book, and I aim to keep reading the series, but don't expect to be blown away.

Summary: "Complex, intense and revealing"

In this book the main characters are not taken care of, not babied and no Disney ending is around the corner. Having said that, Joanna discoveries a whole new, powerful way to take care of herself and those around her. Instead of having to rely on the Light for her backup and decisions, she has given herself a voice and permission to become who she is meant to be and to trust unlikely sources in the process. I always figured Joanna having more powers would be her destiny, I never considered that having less would actually be the key to her survival.

Joanna struggles intensely in this book and when her heart breaks for Hunter, the Light and her mother she seems to fight and lose the battle, which makes this book so uniquely powerful to me; Joanna loses, she has huge moments of weak almost broken will....amazing, she is human! In her emotional breaks, she loses part of her sarcastic, guarded youth and matures into the hero that she has been so afraid of becoming.

Finding out the truths behind Warren, Zoe, Hunter and the Tulpa took this book to another level. Of course I have always wondered what the back story with these characters was and now some of the mysteries are becoming more clear. Mind you, this series remains as shrouded and mysterious as ever but there are some people who are now much more defined. Joanna herself transitioned beautifully in this book. Her relationships with Cher and Suzanne were touching and real. She is finally embracing parts of Olivia that were her strengths and accepting both the loss and the gain of taking over her sister's life.
This book is complex and intense. It is my favorite in the series so far, which is amazing as so often it seems series lose their way around book 4 or 5. Nice work on this one! I love it.

Summary: "a good continuation of in entertaining series"

I've read all of this series to date. Cheat the Grave was a great continuation. Characters developed more depth and personality. I cannot wait 'til the next one comes out. Definitely an urban fantasy book that's worth adding to your collection.

Summary: "Absolutely Amazing!"

When I began this fifth book in the Zodiac series, I was very concerned as to what would happen to Joanna Archer now that she is mortal. She surrendered her powers in Midheaven, which is a stronghold for Rouge agents, to save a child and her beloved Las Vegas. This book picks up with Joanna receiving a written warning to stay home and not go out, but she must attend a wedding shower for her friend, Cher's mother, Suzanne. Part of the entertainment for the evening is a scavenger hunt that leads Joanna on a new journey with new characters and some frightening old ones. Warren and his troop of agents of the Light have abandoned Joanna. Her lover, Hunter, was left in Midheaven, with his wife, Solange. It is that connection to Midheaven that brings about a new assassin that she must now battle without her superhero powers or her conduit weapon, the bow & arrow of the Archer. We are introduced to a whole new set of characters, the Rogues, who are agents neither of Shadow nor Light, but Gray. She is still bound to the Kairos prophecy, but how can she be the chosen one when she no longer has her superhero powers? Vickie Pettersson always gives us a rich story, full of interesting characters and her plots are always surprising, and she consistently takes chances with her characters. This series of books are never predictable, always fresh, and highly entertaining. They are by far, one of my favorite series in Urban Fantasy. They never follow the cookie cutter strong female heroine, dark but handsome love interest and happy ending formula. They twist and turn and surprise, but most importantly, never disappoint. Be sure and read the first four in this Zodiac series, as these are not stand-alone books. You must read the previous books to understand all the layering and plot twists if you want to begin to keep up.
